Poly GIP French Exchange: Mercredi 25 mars: LYON

Today, we boarded the train and set off for the beautiful city of Lyon, warmly welcomed by Inès and Moorea, two BTS Tourism students who guided us throughout the day.

We began our visit at the stunning Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, perched high above the city. Built in 1896, this architectural gem left us absolutely speechless. Its intricate mosaics, rich decorations, and luminous interiors captivated everyone. From the esplanade, we took in a breathtaking panoramic view of Lyon, while learning about the city’s different neighborhoods and their history.

We then made our way down into the old town, "Le Vieux Lyon", where we experienced one of Lyon’s most unique features: the traboules. Derived from the Latin transambulare (“to cross”), these hidden passageways allowed silk merchants to move quickly through the city and later served as secret routes for the French Resistance during World War II. Students loved exploring these mysterious corridors—like stepping into a hidden side of history.

Our walk continued along charming cobblestone streets toward the majestic Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon. Along the way, we passed the fascinating Musée du Cinema et de la Miniature, honoring the Lumière brothers, inventors of early motion picture technology, and the Musée Gadagne, dedicated to the history of Lyon and its beloved puppet character, Guignol, but also its Charvet clock. We also learnt about local specialties like the Pralines (rose candy) and the Bouchons which are the names given to popular Lyon’s restaurants. We walked through le Jardin Archeologique whose archaelogical excavations were carried out between 1972 and 1977 and revealed remnants from various periods, ranging from the 1st century AD to the 16th century. These excavations unearthed the remains of Lyon's original Episcopal group, shedding light on the city's early Christian communities.

After crossing the lively Place Bellecour, one of the largest public squares in Europe, we enjoyed a well-deserved lunch break.

In the afternoon, we visited the Musée des Confluences, located at the meeting point of the Saône and Rhône rivers. This modern museum impressed us with both its bold architecture and its engaging exhibits, offering a perfect blend of science, culture, and history.

It was a full and enriching day, filled with discovery, history, and moments of wonder in one of France’s most vibrant cities.

Zara:

Bonjour! Notre journée a commencé tôt, avec un rendez-vous à 7h50 devant le lycee Ozanam . Encore un peu fatigués, nous avons marché a la gare de Mâcon. Apres, nous avons acheté nos billets et pris un petit-déjeuner rapide. Pour beaucoup, le café était necessaire!!!

Apres environ trente minutes de train, nous sommes arrivés a Lyon. Nous avons pris plusieurs métros pour aller a la basilique de Fourvière, ou des étudiants de BTS nous ont expliqué l’histoire de la ville. La vue était très belle et nous a aidés à mieux comprendre Lyon.

Ensuite, nous sommes descendus à pied vers le Vieux Lyon. A la place Saint-Jean, nous avons appris plus sur le quartier. Nous avons aussi traversé les traboules, des passages cachés entre les bâtiments. C’était intéressant, même si elles se ressemblaient beaucoup.

Apres, nous avons déjeuné a la Brioche Dorée. C’était une bonne pause après toute la marche. Puis, nous avons eu un peu de temps pour faire du shopping en groupes. Il pleuvait un peu, mais ce n’était pas un problème.

Avant de continuer, nous nous sommes retrouvés chez Amorino. Beaucoup ont pris un café au lieu d’une glace, parce qu’on était encore fatigués. Dans l’ensemble, c’était une matinée imteressante qui nous a permis de découvrir Lyon.

Ella:

Après que nous avons acheté de la glace, nous avons marché jusqu’au métro. Nous avons pris le métro au Musée des Confluences. J’ai appris que “Confluences” est l’endroit où les deux fleuves, le Rhône et la Saône, deviennent un seul fleuve. C’est un musée d'Histoire Naturelle. Quand nous sommes arrivés, nous avons dû passer par la sécurité et après, la première exposition que nous avons vue avait des animaux et des fossiles préhistoriques. Nous avons regardé un petit film sur la création des espèces. Après quelques expositions, nous sommes montés sur le toit où nous avons vu une vue incroyable de Lyon. Nous avons fini avec le magasin dans le musée et après nous avons pris le métro à la Gare Part-Dieu où nous avons acheté des boissons avant l’arrivée de notre train. Le trajet en train a duré 40 minutes et nous eu l’opportunité de réfléchir à notre belle journée à Lyon!
