Lundi 23 mars: Ecole Ozanam et visite de Macon

Today, our students truly felt the effects of jet lag, but despite some tired faces, they embraced a rich and meaningful first day in Mâcon.

We began the morning at Ozanam Notre-Dame de Mâcon, where students were warmly welcomed and introduced to this private school. We learned about its fascinating history- most notably that the building served as a hospital during World War II. Students were also introduced to the city of Mâcon itself, the birthplace of the renowned writer and philanthropist Alphonse de Lamartine, whose legacy is deeply rooted throughout the town.

In the afternoon, two students from the BTS Tourisme program guided us on a walking tour of Mâcon, offering insightful commentary and helping bring the city’s history to life.

Our first stop was the Ancient Pharmacy of the Hôtel-Dieu, an architectural gem designed according to the plans of Soufflot, featuring an impressive elliptical dome of remarkable size and height. We then continued to the Saint-Vincent Cathedral, built at the request of Napoleon I, and the site of Alphonse de Lamartine’s funeral in 1869. Since 1994, the cathedral has been recognized as a historical monument.

We enjoyed a well-deserved pause at a café terrace near the Maison de Bois, a stunning 15th-century wooden house that still stands today. Its façade, richly decorated with intricate and sometimes playful carved figures, captured everyone’s attention.

Our walk continued along the Quai Lamartine, where we saw the statue of the famous writer, before visiting Saint-Pierre Church, built in the 1860s by Berthier, a student of Viollet-le-Duc. This neo-Romanesque church, with its striking three-level façade, offered another glimpse into the city’s architectural richness.

We ended our tour at the Hôtel de Senecé, a beautiful 18th-century mansion that now houses the Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Literature of Mâcon.

Despite the fatigue, students showed great curiosity and resilience throughout the day. We are all looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures in Cluny and at the Château de Fléchères!

Aujourd'hui je me suis reveillé à 6 heures et je n'ai pas dormi beaucoup donc je suis très fatigué! Et ouis je suis allé a un cours d’espagnol avec mon correspondant et nous avons mange le petit déjeuner. Ensuite, nous avons reçu des petits cadeaux de la part du principal de l’école Ozanam et visté une classe de DNL pour répondre à des questions des élèves français.Nous avons abordé l’impact de la mode rapide (“fast fashion”)en français et en anglais. Nous avons présenté Polytechnic à une classe de BTS tourisme. Aujourd’hui, j’ai appris quelques expressions françaises comme “à tes souhaits” ou “ce qui se passe à Macon reste à Macon!” Enfin nous avons mangé à la cantine et nous avons discuté avec les élèves et découvert un des repas typiques: le boeuf bourguignon!

Aujourd’hui, je suis allé au lycée avec mon frère d’accueil. Prémièrement, je suis allé au cours de biologie et j’ai vu des moustiques sous microscope avec Mason et Natalia. Nous avons aussi vu des cellules sanguines. Pendant la deuxième partie de la classe mon frère d’accueil et moi avons étudié les organes de lapin. Ensuite nous sommes partis des classes de nos correspondants pour aller au cours d’anglais avec les élèves en première. Cette classe était interessante parce que nous avons discuté de notre quotidien avec les élèves français. Avant de manger le déjeuner, nous avons visité une classe de BTS avec les étudiants qui étudient le tourisme. Ils nous ont enseigne l’histoire de la France et de Macon. J’ai appris que Napoleon est d’origine Italienne. Après la leçon nous avons fait un Kahoot. Mason et moi avons gagné! Après avoir mangé le déjeuner (boeuf bourguignon), je suis allé au cours de maths. Au début de la classe, le prof était très énervée parce que ses élèves bavardaient trop. Maintenant le décalage horaire est très difficile pour moi, donc pendant l’après-midi je n’avais pas beaucoup d’énérgie. Je pense que demain sera mieux.
