Today was an amazing start to our stay with the Saint Martin Group. We were able to join the 3èmes (9th graders) on their class trip to Dover (Douvres) and Canterbury. We met at 6am this morning to take the hovercraft from Calais to Dover and were able to enjoy the gorgeous white cliffs and scenery. Upon our arrival we went to eat a typical English breakfast at a pub to have the energy to visit the castle, and its secret tunnels used during the 100 Years War and WWII. There was also a Roman lighthouse that looked over the city. It was very windy and cold, so we gained an appreciation for the solders that had to endure discomfort over the years.
After lunch, we set off for Canterbury, where we visited the renowned cathedral where Thomas Beckett was murdered. In spite of our jet lag, we came away in awe. Tomorrow we start our classes and look forward to seeing how our lessons go.
